As this is one of the few downtown areas in Montreal not covered by open building footprints (which might be imported into OSM soon), we want to add the building footprints manually. Please add all building outlines in ParkEx.

When saving your work, please leave the default comment but add what you actually mapped, for example "added buildings and a residential road".

Imagery

Please use the Bing aerial imagery

In JOSM you choose "Bing aerial imagery" from the menu "Imagery". If the imagery seems to be out of alignment with existing roads and buildings, you should apply a shift on the imagery. In JOSM: from the menu “Imagery”, choose “New offset.” Adjust the image visually (never move OSM data to match the imagery, always move the imagery to match already existing data).

Buildings

  • Find a building on the satellite imagery and trace it with the "Building" tool (from JOSM's plug-in list). Buildings will be automatically tagged and will have right angles.
  • Please map all the buildings you can see within the square that you choose; if you leave some buildings unmapped do not mark the square as "Mark Task as Done"
  • Avoid having building polygons touch each other

If you cannot complete the square, click "Stop mapping" and write a comment about your contributions (e.g., mapped buildings with Bing imagery) and any issues that arised (e.g., too much tree coverage to map all buildings)

Once you have completed a square, click "Mark Task as Done" and write a comment about your contributions (e.g., mapped buildings with Bing imagery)

Start Mapping!

  • Click the "Start contributing" button below
  • Find a square (i.e. a task)
  • Click the "Start mapping" button to lock the square. If the square is too big, you can split it with the "Split" button
  • Have JOSM open in the background
  • Click "Edit with JOSM", the map extract will show up in JOSM
  • Remember:
    • If you cannot complete the square, click "Stop mapping" and write a comment about your contributions (e.g., mapped buildings with Bing imagery) and any issues that arised (e.g., too much tree coverage to map all buildings)
    • Once you have completed a square, click "Mark task as done" and write a comment about your contributions (e.g., mapped buildings with Bing imagery)
